The church of St. Rocco stands along the main Brtonigla road, at the turn towards Marzari in the direction of the north exit. This small 14th-century sacral building was originally dedicat¬ed to St. John the Baptist, while the original church of St. Rocco was located near today’s kindergarten. The plagues that ravaged Europe and Istria between the 13th and 17th century resulted in many churches being dedicated to St. Rocco, the patron saint of plague and malaria. Brtonigla also had one, and when it was dilapidated, after the cholera epidemic of 1855, the existing church of St. John the Baptist was renamed St. Rocco.
. The celebration of St. Rocco on August 16 became one of the important summer events in Istria: on that day a wooden statue of St. Rocco is carried in a procession through the streets of Brtonigla.
