The local parish church, until 1552, was the one in the cemetery near Serban (also St. Michael’s), but in the 16th century a new and larger building was built in the town itself. The first church of Nova Vas (built from 1540 to 1552) was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and later renamed St. Michael Archangel. It was upgraded and rebuilt several times: first in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it took on its present baroque form, then again in 1822, 1870, 1976 and in the beginning of this century (2001-2008).
The original spire of its 18-meter-high bell tower with three bells, built in 1639, was up¬graded and redesigned in 1930.
